Late Night SnackIt’s another weekday evening with you nestled comfortably on the sofa watching your favorite television show. As the screen flickers to a commercial break your mind begins a mental tug-o-war with itself.

You finished dinner only an hour or two ago, yet you find yourself craving a snack! The little devil on your shoulder coaxes you to taste the fresh pie in the fridge. “One sliver of a slice surely won’t hurt? Indulge yourself,” he says.

As your mouth begins to water, the miniature angel on your opposing shoulder pulls you back. He whispers something like, “Tsk, tsk, you’re watching your weight. If you eat those calories after 9PM they’ll go straight to fat.”

What’s a person to do? You can start by ignoring both the angel and devil on your shoulders.

You shouldn’t be concerned about the time that you eat. Eating a properly portioned late night snack will not lead to weight gain. Rather you should be focused on calories consumed, and whether that snack puts you over your daily limit. Your angel, while well intentioned is a little misinformed.

Then again, your devil isn’t innocent. While only suggesting a slice of pie, he knows it could easily lead to an extra slice or two and a whopping few hundred more calories. After all, the hardest time to maintain healthy eating habits is between dinner and bedtime.

So when is late night snacking OK?

As long as you aren’t exceeding your daily calorie limit, and are eating balanced meals throughout the day, then late night snacking is OK.
