Calories In Fast Food

Massachusetts will be soon be joining California and New York City in the battle against excessive calories. Beginning November 1, 2010, the state will require restaurants to label calorie counts for the food they sell.

By far this is the strictest calorie legislation passed to date.

Massachusetts Calorie Law Overview:

  • Restaurant chains with 20 or more in-state locations must show calorie counts on their menus.
  • Unlike California, drive-through menus must also display calorie counts. This is significant, because more than 65% of fast food is purchased at drive-through windows.
  • Unlike California, the law will not supersede stricter regulations already imposed by some municipalities.

How Will Calorie Legislation Impact Your Diet?

Prior to this legislation fast food restaurants relied on secrecy. Without knowing how many calories we consumed, customers could happily live in denial.

No impetus existed for us to cut back or discontinue the ritual of eating fast food 3 to 4 times per week. Dieters easily fell off the wagon, fooling themselves into indulging in the occasional Big Mac, all the while instinctively knowing it will put them over their daily calorie limit.

As more states pass this type of legislation, I think it will hasten the current trend for smaller portioned, healthier meals at restaurants. When you put this nutritional information in front of consumers, we will demand healthier alternatives.
