A Quick Lesson In Physics

Water Flowing Around RocksIn nature everything tends to follow the path of least resistance – water flows in a straight line downhill unless blocked by a rock. Even then water will flow around the stone, rather than try and move the rock.

Right about now you might be saying, “Look I came here to lose weight, not get a lesson in physics. Just tell me, how I can look good on the beach this summer?” Well don’t hit the back button just yet, because that physics principle holds true for your diet.

Diets, Hunger, Cravings, and You

Typical diets are simple in concept: eat fewer calories, and your body will store fewer calories. Voila, the secret to weight loss is revealed, go enjoy being skinny! A simple idea, then why isn’t it easy to practice? The answer will leave you smacking your forehead and saying, “Why didn’t I think of that?”

The diet equation above leaves out the obstacle to success – resistance, specifically, hunger and cravings.

Most diets require you to either stop eating certain foods or refrain eating for a period of time. That means your will power to fit into those old jeans has to go toe to toe with your body’s urge to eat (and eat what it wants). I’ll give you one guess as to who typically wins in this all out slugfest (Hint it’s not your will power).

Circumventing Resistance & Sticking To Your Diet

Lets tackle one issue at a time. The first is hunger, when you begin eating less it’s natural for your body to feel starved, especially if you’re cutting all the calories in one sitting.

But what if you ate small meals continuously throughout the day? You would never be hungry, because by the time your body burned off the calories you ate it would be time for the next meal. This is advice that is not only common sense, but is scientifically proven.

The next blow to your will power with most diets is cravings. When on a diet that restricts what you can eat, cravings move in faster than a cheetah chasing down a gazelle.

One of the reasons is psychological, when you actively avoid a food, it will be on your mind all the time. Your thoughts run to a predictable conclusion, “I am not going to eat that cake…I am going to be good, just ignore the cake…even though the cake is right there…and would be quite tasty if I ate that cake…” Feel like cake now?

The other reason is physiological, many fatty foods or other common foods restricted by diets contain nutrients and vitamins that your body needs to function properly, meaning those cravings are your body saying it’s imbalanced and needs to be fed. The solution – eat a variety of foods. When eating multiple, small meals throughout the day you can eat from every food group, thereby appeasing the cravings of your mind and body.

Dieting doesn’t have to be a battle between will power and urges. There is a path of least resistance, and the 60 Minute Diet book will teach how to lose weight while eating the foods you want.
