Super Size Me Addiction In America

The lights are on, but you’re not home.
Your mind is not your own.
Your heart sweats, your body shakes,
Another cake is what it takes,
Might as well face it, you’re addicted to food!

Are you humming along yet? At some time in life we all face an addiction to food. How many times have you said or heard others say something like, “You don’t understand how much harder it is to break this addiction. I have to eat food to survive, but smokers don’t have to have cigarettes to survive”. True, but it’s slightly off base from the truth.

Struggling with a weight problem comes from being addicted to the wrong food. Yes, all humans have to eat to continue living. However we did just fine before learning how to refine sugar and cocoa. Before pastry and dessert became an art form. Before “Super Size It” and the resulting body weight issues were a glimmer in some marketers eye. Our creativity, ingenuity and prosperity are working against us when it comes to eating in America.

We’re not addicted to food. We’re addicted to gigantic portions, an endless array of choices at the grocery store,  and convenient, cheap deep fried food at drive-thru’s. But there is good news! We don’t have to break our addiction to food, we have to break our addiction to these bad habits! Instead of killing ourselves believing we have to give up all the things we love to achieve our weight goals, start by giving up a few bad habits.

Here are some ideas that I have implemented with success and no emotional trauma:

  • Skip the drive-thru fries.  Sure they taste good, but turn into fat!
  • Share desert. Order dessert for the whole table and share it. Take one bite, passing it around until it’s gone. Satisfy the craving while sacrificing calories.
  • Pass on the chips. When ordering a sandwich at lunch chips are included, replace these with coleslaw or a fruit alternative.
  • Abstain (I know, sounds scary). Tell your server to not bring out the basket of bread before your meal. If it’s not there you can’t eat it.
  • Drink something hot, it fills you up. Replace an afternoon trip to the vending machine with a cup of hot tea.
  • Skip the dinner salad. Didn’t you have a salad at lunch? You don’t need one before dinner, why add the calories when you don’t have to?

Break one bad habit at a time and you won’t feel deprived, but you will begin to see and feel the benefits of your new eating habits.
